FAQ

What is Wild Child?

Wild Child is an upcoming interactive gallery and play space pop-up for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers that thoughtfully engages all of their developing senses. We believe that children need to make messes, be loud, break things, and roam free. We will be collaborating with local artists to create an environment where children can freely immerse themselves, inviting them to climb or crawl on sculptures, paint on floors, interact with visual projections, and participate in making a beautiful, dynamic space together.

Why is art important for young children?

The same reason why it’s important for all of us – it’s good for our brains. Creative works offer a different perspective, invoke imagination, and invite exploration. In a child’s early years, they learn through play. By providing an interactive playground where unexpected things happen, children’s senses are heightened and curiosity is stoked. When fully engaged in self-directed play, when tackling a novel challenge, when mastering a skill, cognitive explosions result.

“The principal goal of education is to create (wo)men who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done – (wo)men who are creative, inventive, and discoverers.” – Jean Piaget

When will Wild Child launch?

We hope to open our doors on October 4th, 2019 and will operate until January 2020, with the possibility of extending based on demand.

Where are you located?

Our first installation will take place at the storied Junior Center for the Arts and Sciences in Oakland. This will be the first of many pop-ups we hope to launch around the Bay Area to test our concept and offer the experience to a wider community of children.

What types of artists are you looking for, And how will we collaborate?

All types – experiential, mixed media, installation, projection artists and the like. There are three ways in which we could collaborate: help us build a Wild Child designed art piece, create an original piece of your own, and/or lead an art workshop for kids. Apply to work with us here.

What types of exhibits will be shown at the gallery?

Visual projections, giant crawlable sculptures, interactive playful lights, indoor and outdoor play structures, and more.  While we have some specific exhibits in mind, we are also open to commissioning new concepts with you! Given that we have an especially curious and precocious audience, all exhibits must be made of safe and durable materials.

Will artists be paid for their work?

All artists commissioned by Wild Child will be paid for their work. However we will not be profiting from this initial endeavor and have a non-profit sized budget. Once we establish a scope of work, artists will create a proposal for approval. Once selected, you can start working on your kid-friendly masterpiece!

What kind of recognition will I receive as an artist?

Like traditional galleries, artist info and title of works will be included on signage in space. Artists will also be featured on the WC website, social media, and other marketing materials.
